Synopsis: The year 2020 has seen the world being traumatised with Covid-19 pandemic. The Covid-19
virus originated from Wuhan, China currently infected the rest of the world including Malaysia. This
talk will discussthe work previously by the speaker on classification of major lung diseases and her
current work on classification of lung infected with Covid-19 using chest radiography images.

Informatics, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Kuala Lumpur Campus.  She received her B. Sc. In
Electrical Engineering from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas and her Master of Electrical
Engineering (by research) and PhD (Electrical Engineering) from UTM.  Her research area is in image
processing and image analysis. Her current work concentrates on medical image analysis using
machine and deep learning techniques for lung diseases, calcification detection using IVUS images
and handwriting recognition.  She has published many papers in journals and in indexed conference
proceedings, and has published one academic book and 3 book chapters. Currently she is the Head of
the Electrophysiology Research Group, and Malaysia Quality Assurance auditor for Electrical
Engineering B.Sc and M.Sc program.

Abstract

The study on recommender or recommendation system has a long history. Today, several recommender systems have been developed for different domains and continue to grow driven rapidly by the availability of various types of user data and the growing interest in the research community. We may be able to find the most favorite and best item or information from the Internet, but we have a big problem on information overload and information explosion. In general, a recommender is defined as tools to help identify worthwhile stuff and recommendation systems are a type of personalization service that learn about the needs and preferences of an individual, and then proactively recognizes and recommends information that meets those needs.

In this talk, we will explain the concept, current state, and techniques for recommendation. Next, we will show several applications of recommender system. Finally, we will discuss the research challenges and future direction of recommendation system
