KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Dr. Gerard Borg

Dr. Gerard Borg

Australian National University

Gerard Borg is a research scientist and lecturer in wireless and radiofrequency engineering at the Australian National University. Early in his career he worked in plasma physics. For his doctorate, he studied guided Alfven wave propagation in fusion relevant plasmas and later the fundamental physics of wave motion in laboratory plasmas. He later discovered and investigated various kinds of plasma antenna for stealthy wireless communications. More recently, he has championed the cause of regional / remote broadband wireless Internet and how to connect the billions of people living in regions of the planet that are well beyond the spatial reach and economic means of current technologies. Gerard is also a strong advocate for the democratisation of the Internet and believes that it is now time to deliver low cost usable mobile broadband to everyone on the planet.

ANU-MIMO: Wireless Broadband for Everybody

In cellular networks, both the mobile wireless spectrum and the connection from the base station to the back-haul are shared among a large number of mobile clients in a cell. Such an approach to wireless networking can never be scalable or spectrally efficient. Cellular roll-outs to remote areas will usually be uneconomical: especially in developing countries. If our aim is to bring broadband to the unconnected, then an entirely different approach to wireless networking is required. At the Australian National University, we have been developing a novel wireless access network based on multi-user MIMO. This network can be deployed cost-effectively by successively connecting base stations to a broadband IP point-of-interconnect as remote clients are added to the network. Given the increasing numbers of urban and regional townships connected to fibre, such an approach could empower local communities to wirelessly extend their networks to isolated populations. In this talk, I present simulations of the performance of such a network in the context of Indonesia by using well established path-loss models.

Prof. Mohamed Ridza Wahiddin, PhD, DSc

International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM)

Upon completion of his PhD (UMIST, UK) Mohamed Ridza returned to Malaysia in August 1989 and took up a lecturer position at the University of Malaya. He is the MOSTE 1994 National Young Scientist Award winner in recognition of his research in Quantum Optics. He then joined the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) on 1 June 2001 to help establish the Kulliyyah of Science. For his outstanding contributions to Quantum Optics he is awarded the higher doctoral degree, Doctor of Science (DSc) by UMIST, UK in December 2004. In 2005 MIMOS Berhad requested IIUM for Prof Ridza to spearhead the National R&D Cyber Security agenda. He successfully completed his six year secondment at MIMOS. He is MIMOS Best Innovator for 2007 and recipient of MIMOS Innovator Award (2011) in conjunction with MIMOS 25th Anniversary. He is an Honoree of the 2009 Asia Pacific Information Security Leadership Achievement from (ISC)2 – Senior IT Security Professional Category. He is also the recipient of the 2010 Cyber Security Malaysia Award for Information Security Visionary of the Year (CXO of the Year) and 2011 ASEAN Chief Security Officer. Prof Ridza is recognized as one of the 2017 Top Research Scientists Malaysia. Presently, he is a Professor at the Department of Computer Science, IIUM and was the IIUM Deputy Rector (Research and Innovation) for the period 1 July 2013 – 30 June 2017.

Quantum Information and Industry 4.0

The ICT Revolution through Moore’s Law, Hardware Architecture and Algorithms are responsible for the disruptive technologies driving Industry 4.0. Quantum computers and quantum cryptography are now considered serious candidates to further enhance the performance of the manufacturing sector. Central to both is a new way of defining information namely quantum information. I will discuss the importance of the vacuum as a resource of quantum information for quantum computing. The discussion will end by putting Industry 4.0 within the framework of humanity.

SOCIAL NETWORK TOUR

Option 1 : Batu Caves & Genting Highland (Preferred)
Option 2 : Batu Caves & Bukit Tinggi
                 Option 3 : Petrosains & Aquaria
Option 4 : Putra Jaya and Science Park

Batu Caves

Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur Kuala Lumpur Attractions 185 Batu Caves, one of Kuala Lumpur’s most frequented tourist attractions, is a limestone hill comprising three major caves and a number of smaller ones. Located approximately 11 kilometres to the north of Kuala Lumpur, this 100-year-old temple features idols and statues erected inside the main caves and around it. Incorporated with interior limestone formations said to be around 400 million years old, the temple is considered an important religious landmark by Hindus.

Genting Highlands

Genting Highlands is an integrated resort development comprising hotels, casinos and a theme park in Pahang, perched on the peak of Gunung Ulu Kali at 1,800 meters high. Nestled near the border of Selangor within an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur (about 35km), Genting Resort presents a popular weekend getaway from the city heat, conveniently connected by Karak Highway and major trunk roads, along with a cable car service from the satellite town of Gohtong Jaya. On a clear day, the peak overlooks lush valleys of rainforest stretching towards KL, a breathtaking view for visitors as they enjoy the cooling weather and serene mountain environment.

Bukit Tinggi

Bukit Tinggi is just over an hour’s drive from Kuala lumpur City centre and lies some 2,500 feet above sea level. Colmar Tropicale, located in Bukit Tinggi, Pahang, is a replica of a collection of buildings from a north-eastern village in France dating back to the 16th Century. It’s just like a picture postcard. The French themed resort was opened in July 2000. It’s surrounded by lush tropical forest land.

Petrosains

Petrosains is a Science Discovery Centre that uses a fun and interactive approach to tell the story of the science and technology of the petroleum industry.

Aquaria

Another must-visit in KLCC is the 465 sq. m Aquaria KLCC, which houses over 5,000 freshwater and marine creatures under its roof. Situated on the concourse level of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, one of its main attractions is massive glass tank with a 90m walk-through tunnel with a moving travelator in its centre. You can even get up close and personal with tiger sharks and stingrays by plunging into the tank within the confines of a submerged cage.

Technology Park Malaysia

The Technology Park Malaysia (TPM) is a science park located in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for research and development of knowledge-based industries. Its total land area of 750 acres (3.0 km2), comprises 12 state-of-the-art buildings each with specific functions. It is in phase 1 of implementation.

Putrajaya

Putrajaya is Malaysia’s third and latest Federal Territory. Built on an expansive marshland and former oil palm estate in Selangor, the city spans an area of almost 5,000 hectares and lies 25 km from Kuala Lumpur. Putrajaya takes over the administrative functions of the capital city Kuala Lumpur and is part of the Multimedia Super Corridor project of the Malaysian government.
